Choosing a product does not have to start with a big advertising promise. Start with clear information: what you are buying, who it is for and how it is used.
Read the label first
Check ingredients, amounts per recommended serving and warnings. “Natural” does not guarantee safety, and a supplement cannot replace a varied diet. Pay particular attention if you already take other products. The NIH consumer guide explains more.
Compare details, not just prices
- Are you comparing the same product and pack size?
- Can you read the directions, expiry date and storage instructions?
- Do you distinguish the total pack contents from the recommended daily amount?
- Who can answer your questions if information is missing?
Check with a professional
Before use, discuss your medicines and supplements with a doctor or pharmacist. Do not replace prescribed treatment or increase the amount on your own. If you experience an adverse reaction, stop use and seek medical advice. See the FDA's supplement safety advice.
